Bucks Mens 'B' Versus Hereford Mens 'B' ~ Match Report

Bucks B?s went 3rd in the Region 5 table with a 25-19 win against Herefordshire at the Herald. The B?s are now 11 points clear of Gloucester in 4th place and just 10 points behind Northants in 2nd. With Worcestershire runaway leaders and the top 2 teams qualifying for Great Yarmouth, Bucks have put themselves in with a real chance of second spot.

The start of the match was delayed due to Herefordshire arriving late. No surprise really considering the distance they had to travel. Nevertheless it gave Bucks a bit more table time and time to prepare. The B team line-up was John Clavey, Paul Andersen, Chris Cox, Dan Wilkins, Chris Willoughby, Jon Loveday, Chris Lee, Terry Steventon, Daren White, David Larner and Tony Haggarty with Dean Mills named as sub.

The B?s started favourites against the team currently propping up the region at the foot of the table. Nevertheless, nothing could be taken for granted and this was proved in a very close first session with Bucks and Hereford exchanging frames throughout. Wins from John Clavey, Chris Cox, Dan Wilkins, Chris Lee, Daren White and Tony Haggarty just edged it in Bucks favour, 6-5 up.

The second session was almost a carbon copy of the first with games again exchanged 1 for 1. The ?drama? in this session was the Hereford captain trying to claim a game off Paul Andersen after Paul swore at himself for missing a ball and not holding his cue during his opponents visit! Needless to say he didn?t and Paul went on to win the frame. John Clavey, Dan Wilkins, Chris Lee, Terry Steventon and Tony Haggarty also secured wins to give Bucks another 6-5 session win and 12-10 overall.

With no mid session break there could be no excuse for what was about to come. Hereford reeled off 5 frames out of the first 6 of the third session to put themselves in the lead for the first time in the match at 15-13. Only Dean Mills (coming in for Chris Cox) could stop the rot. But then Bucks turned the match round and put in their own ?straight line? on the match sheet with the next 8 frames on the bounce. Chris Lee, Terry Steventon, Daren White, David Larner and Tony Haggarty gave Bucks an unlikely 6-5 session win (18-15 overall) and then John Clavey, Paul Andersen and Dean Mills won the first 3 frames of the final session to put Bucks 21-15 up and just 2 frames away from the match win. Chris Willoughby won his frame, then fittingly it was up to POM Chris Lee to secure the match win which he did to record a perfect 4/4 on his return. Daren White also won and Tony Haggarty finished the match off in style with a B&D in the final frame making it 7-4 for the session and 25-19 overall.

Player of the match could have gone to either Chris Lee (4/4) or Tony Haggarty (4/4). Both played equally well for their 100% record, but Chris edged the decision probably because Tony got involved in the ?Paul Andersen? incident and upset their captain. Special mention also to John Clavey and Daren White for an excellent 3/4 each and to Dean Mills (2/2) who would have probably started if he wasn?t working and hence a late arrival.

The next match will be crucial and could decide who goes to Great Yarmouth in second spot. Bucks take on second place Northants knowing that a score better than 24-20 will put the mighty Bucks in a qualifying position. It would be great to get at least one of the men?s teams to Yarmouth to see the Bunnies take the National title?

Another clean sweep for Buckinghamshire with the A?s producing their biggest win of the campaign at 26-18 and of course, the Bunnies destroying all in their path with a 36-8 scoreline. The teams are just getting better and better, a lot of which can be attributed to a superb team spirit throughout.
