Bucks Mens B versus Northants Mens B ~ Match Report

Bucks B?s had their biggest match of the season so far when they entertained arch rivals Northants at the Herald, knowing that a win would put them second in the Region 5 table and in a strong position to qualify for the national finals at Great Yarmouth.

With a few players unavailable for this match, the B?s gave a welcome return to Bucks legend Scott Willers in a strong line-up of Chris Lee, Scott Rutter Peter Hallett, Scott Willers, David Larner, Dan Wilkins, John Clavey, Chris Willoughby, Paul Andersen, Terry Steventon and Tony Haggarty with Jason Williams named as sub.

With such importance on the match the B?s made a very poor start, losing the first 4 frames. Spurred on by the cheers and support from the A team tables after Bucks turncoat Mark McGauley lost to ex-B teamer Daren White, the B?s turned their match around with wins from David Larner, Dan Wilkins, John Clavey, Chris Willoughby, Paul Andersen and Tony Haggarty to give Bucks an unlikely 6-5 lead after the first session.

The second session was much closer with games exchanging 1 for 1. Chris Lee, Peter Hallett, Scott Willers, John Clavey and Tony Haggarty all chalking up wins, but Northants took the session 6-5 to tie the match at 11-11 at the half way stage.

Session 3 and no one was prepared for the disaster which was about to unfold. The Bunnies were winning (of course) and the A?s were having an incredible game beating the former regional champions. Unfortunately the clean sweep was well and truly off the table as the B?s lost the first 3 frames of the session. Scott Willers and David Larner provided some rest bite, but then Northants reeled off the next 10 frames without reply, taking the session 9-2 (20-13 overall) and quickly dispatched the first 4 frames of the final session to put the game beyond doubt at 24-13. The B?s were now looking at a mauling so it was important to keep their composure for the last few frames as every point counted, just in case Northants do slip up later in the season giving Bucks an outside chance of catching them for second spot. Fortunately, David Larner, Dan Wilkins, Jason Williams, Paul Andersen, Terry Steventon and Tony Haggarty found wins to actually take the session 6-5 and restore some respectability to the scoreline at 25-19 to Northants. In a game that we felt we could win, the score was disappointing, but it could have been a whole lot worse.

Player of the match could have gone to either Tony Haggarty (3/4) or David Larner (3/4), but Tony deserved the accolade in the end with another consistent performance. Scott Willers, Dan Wilkins, John Clavey and Paul Andersen all finished on 2/4.

Congratulations to the A?s bagging a massive scalp with the second biggest victory in Bucks history against Northants 26-18, and, of course, the Bunnies destroying their opponents yet again after a false start with a 30-14 scoreline.

The B?s were out sung by their 2 other squad teams, which is unusual (maybe not in the Bunnies case as they are always loud). Maybe it was because the A?s had so much passion with something to prove playing against former teammates. I don?t know, but it was a pleasure to see. The B?s have to put this right and get the hunger for winning back in the hearts and minds of the team ready for Gloucestershire next month. Third versus forth, the result could define our season.
