Gloucs Men's 'B' versus Bucks Men's 'B' ~ Match Report
Posted by bullet.gif Barlow on July 13 2009
Bucks B?s put the disappointment of last month?s defeat behind them with a 23-21 victory at a real dive of a venue away to Gloucestershire, a scoreline which, in truth, flattered the home side. Rarely did Gloucestershire threaten, but in the end, it almost went down to a deciding frame. The win, albeit welcome, should have been by a more convincing margin.

Tewkesbury sounds such a nice place. Trust me it isn?t. Double D?s has to win the award for the shittiest venue in the region, even worse than Oxfordshire?s converted garage which is saying something, and Hereford?s cowshed is positively 5 star luxury in comparison ? straw and all. Even parking is a public car park ? mile up the road at ?6 a throw. Ventilation was non existent in the back room where the men?s teams had to play in claustrophobic conditions. It was damp, musty and generally very uncomfortable. I?ll leave it to your imagination as to what the tables were like? and don?t mention the ?food?. Oh, and the Bunnies had to play in what felt like the entrance hall. The Regional Champions with their truly international line-up really shouldn?t have to play in such conditions. Do they know who we are?

It really does make you appreciate what a fantastic venue we have at the Herald MK.

Again, the men?s matches were delayed almost an hour while the home side sorted out their teams. This is happening to us time and time again, but apparently there is nothing we can do about it. It?s very disappointing when we have a 2 hour drive but can still be ready to start at 12:00. The girls were 11 nil up by the time the men?s matches got underway.

Anyway, on to the match itself. After a slight reshuffle due to a late change in the A?s, the B?s lined-up with Scott Rutter, Chris Lee, Dan Wilkins, Paul Andersen, Jason Williams, Chris Cox, David Larner, Tony Haggarty, Terry Steventon, Jon Loveday and Chris Willoughby with Peter Hallett named as sub.

The B?s got off to a great start quickly going 3 nil up with wins from Scott Rutter, Chris Lee and Dan Wilkins. Gloucs pulled a couple of frames back, but wins from Jason Williams, David Larner and Jon Loveday gave Bucks a 6-5 first session lead.

The second session saw Gloucs pull level at one point, with only Dan Wilkins and Chris Cox managing wins in the first 5 frames, but Chris Lee, Terry Steventon, Jon Loveday, Tony Haggarty and David Larner eventually secured a 7-4 session win and 13-9 overall.

Bucks took 3 out of the first 4 frames in the third session with wins from Scott Rutter, Chris Lee and Dan Wilkins. 16-10 ahead and it looked like we were on for a match win by some margin, but then a catastrophic run saw only Tony Haggarty manage another win in the session as Gloucs took 6 out of the next 7 frames. The match was now closely poised at 17-16 in Bucks favour but Gloucs were in the ascendance.

It was important to get off to a good start in the forth session and fortunately Bucks had the 2 form players of the day to kick it off. Chris Lee and Dane Wilkins both secured their 4/4?s for the day and Paul Andersen chalked up a win to again give Bucks some breathing space at 20-16, but back came Gloucs with the next 3 frames for 20-19. Chris Cox then won, closely followed by Jon Loveday to secure at least a draw. Gloucs again pulled one back but it was Terry Steventon who kept his nerve to get Bucks across the finish line. Gloucs won the last frame to make it a 6-5 session win for Bucks and 23-21 overall.

Dan Wilkins won the Player of the Match award with a consistent performance and 4/4 on the day. Chris Lee also returned with a perfect 4/4 and to be fair the PoM could have gone either way. Special mention also to Jon Loveday for a superb 3/4 on his return after a 2 match absence. Scott Rutter, Chris Cox, David Larner, Terry Steventon and Tony Haggarty all finished on 2/4.

Congratulations to the Bunnies, destroying their opponents yet again by the widest margin this season 38-6 under extremely poor playing conditions.

It just goes to show how far the A?s have come this season when you can say it was a complete shock they not only lost, but by 26-18. What odds would Honest Dog given on that result? A lot of bad luck and ?tactics? from the opposition cost vital frames in the end. I have to say that looking over to the A team tables, there were some complete knobbers in their team. Fortunately Gloucester B?s were a much better bunch.

Overall on the day, the A team result aside, we have to be happy with the win. The team spirit was there, the support was great even though it was tough, cramped, uncomfortable conditions. We have a break now for 2 months before our next game away to Worcestershire. Another long journey and it will probably be the biggest test so far, but at least it?s a decent venue with free parking!
