Gloucestershire V Bucks match report
Posted by bullet.gif cricks on February 14 2012
Here it is then, the start of the 2012 season and a wonderful trip through the English countryside to Gloucestershire.

Having negotiated our way there and managing to park, the phone calls began. ?im just on the way? and ?where can I park? are quite usual I guess. But what was slightly different was the one I received asking ?where it is?. Not unusual in itself perhaps, but the 2 people in the car had actually managed to head towards the venue with neither of them having looked up directions or even the name of the place. And with no sat nav available, you have to wonder what their plans for arrival actually were. Still, they got there in the end.

With both the mens teams instinctively waiting for the cry of ?show me the bunny? that never came and a group of juniors assembled courtesy of Mr Chappell things were a little different. For those of you that asked me about the Ladies team but got no response, all will be revealed in due course.

With the match starting just after the scheduled 12.00 start, the season was under way.

Now, I seem to have the words ?A team off to a poor start? engraved in my brain for the start of these match reports. However, they aren?t actually needed for this one. When Peter Lee and Alan Gardiner rattled off the first two frames things started well. Despite a brief comeback from our hosts, the ?A? team sealed the first session 9-2.

Maybe I don?t need to do away with the words ?team off to a poor start? after all. I just need to replace the A with a B. In not so traditional style, our B team gave our hosts a warm ?thank you for your hospitality? start and an 8-3 first session lead. Wins from the returning Kennedy, Darriba and ?I?m in the final of the Buckingham league singles? White.

With alarm bells ringing and eyes starting to open the B team began the fightback at just the right time, i.e. immediately. Rattling off 4 of the first 5 frames and then 5 of the next 6 and taking the session 9-2. The turnaround had commenced with the B team now leading 12-10 at the halfway point. Nice.

The A team, however, had slipped into generosity mode and handed the first 5 frames of session 2 to Gloucestershire. With the lead now down to 2 it was good to hear talk of still winning the session 6-5, rather than heads going down. And whilst winning it 6-5 didn?t quite happen, the A team did manage to win 5 frames and only lose the session 6-5. A lead of 14-8 at the half way point.

With frames being shared at the start of the 3rd ?A? team session up steps debutant Adam Smith. Adam breaks, nominates yellows and clears up. Marvellous enough in itself, but added to the fact that his opponent, Mr Osbourne, had already been broke and dished in his first frame made it even sweeter. Welcome to Buckinghamshire Adam, I think you?ll do alright.

The A team ended up winning the session 7-4 and now leading 21-12.

Looking to build from the turnaround from session 2 the ?B ? team shared the first 4 frames in the 3rd session before winning 6 of the last 8. The 7-4 session win giving the ?B? team a lead of 19-14 at this point. Bloody good considering the poor start.

Gloucestershire ?B? had a bit of a mini rally at the start of session 4. When the scores were 21-18 at one point a steady hand was needed.

Mr Larner, still wanting to kill somebody from the whopping Wolves had received in the footy, took his anger out on the pool table and rolled in frame number 22. Still one more needed for the win.

Who better for the job than Dog. With Mr Willers making his opponent chase balls round the table for 10 mins before landing the finishing blow the match was now won. And with the opponents dazed the B team finished the job off nicely and ran out eventual 25-19 winners.

For the A team, it was Mr Wharton who quickly got them to the 22 needed for a point, followed moments later by a victory for Jamie Mcgauley ensuring the points. The punishment didn?t stop there though, with Bucks A winning 6 of the next 8 the Mens team left the building comfortable 29-15 winners.

Next up for the B team, a trip to Yarmouth. And with the group who will be heading that way sticking together for the Gloucestershire match a victory was good to send them off in high spirits. See you there at the end of the month fellas. And its Fosters, to save any of you from asking.

Next up for both teams, Northants away. We want to win this region then we need to start off with this lot. And its time we did too.

Difficult task for the captains next month with the returning John ?skiing holiday again? Clavey. Dan ?ive hurt my shoulder lifting my wallet? Wilkins. Dan ?management training? Morgan and Mark ?im going on a day trip to Scotland? Mcgauley. So bear with them everyone.

Well done to George Darriba, his 4 out of 4 winning him the B team MOM and
Jamie Whittaker also winning 4 out of 4 and taking the A team MOM.
