SurreyPool.com v Bucks8Ball.com ~ Match Report
Posted by bullet.gif Dog on November 20 2008
The idea of a Bucks8Ball.com football team was first floated in September by Gee. In less than 2 months we had a team, met for training, appointed a rubbish manager, arranged a fixture and were ready to go. On November 1st a hardy bunch of Bucks pool players with varying football abilities travelled to take on the other major independent pool site on the net - Surreypool.com. Surbiton Town kindly provided the facilites and a clutch of supporters even turned out to watch.

Bucks preparations were hit with four players becoming unavailable in the 24 hours leading up to the game. This left a squad of just 13 and meant some of those anticipating limited action were now required to play the full 90. The side lined up with Terry Taylor in goal, a back four of Dave Larner, Ian Wakeman, Steve Beck and Bruce Goodridge, a midfield quartet of James Blackburn, Harri Shaw, Sam Goodridge and Graham Bright with Jimmy Wharton and Dane Tuttlebee leading the line. George Kilgour and the hungover Mark McGauley started as subs.

The early exchanges were promising with a crunching Becks tackle showing the home side we had a solid back line (later disproved!) and our first chance falling to Sam who blasted over. Minutes later came a suckerpunch with possession lost centrally and a finish from Surrey's Strivens. 1-0.

Two minutes later and we were back on level terms. Cutting attacking play put Jimmy Wharton through and he kept his cool to round the keeper and make it 1-1. On 15 minutes Bucks edged ahead. A Dane Tuttlebee corner from the left was perfectly planted on Jimmys head and he bagged his 2nd goal. It began to look like a Bucks rampage on 17 minutes when Dane was put through and cutely chipped the keeper to extend Bucks lead. 1-3.

Perhaps the turning point of the match came in the 19th minute when Dane went down with a knee injury. Unable to continue, Mark McGauley replaced Tuttlebee who up to that point was running the Surrey defence ragged. On 23 minutes Surrey pulled one back when a 3 on 2 attack was well worked to provide a tap in for the spare man. 2-3. Graham Bright, back in his old hunting ground, soon restored the two goal lead with a 20 yarder. 2-4

Just past the half hour mark, Surrey won a free kick in a dangerous position. Spurning the shooting opportunity, they played in an unmarked runner whose shot produced an outstanding low save from Terry Taylor. Controversy followed as excellent forward work by Jimmy saw him round the Surrey keeper and set up a Gee tap-in only for the referee to puzzlingly rule it out for offside.

Things began to go downhill from this point. Firstly, substitute George Kilgour pulled up not long having come on and was unable to continue. Then some slack defending saw Surrey swarm over the Bucks goal and equalise when Terry could only parry a shot into the path of the oncoming masses. 3-4. Bang on the stroke of half time the home side equalised. A long over the top ball was skilfully flicked on and converted to make it 4-4.

Half time brought a welcome respite for the 11 remaining Bucks players. With no subs left, they were all required to put in a shift in the second 45 mins. Some minor adjustments to the formation resulted in an equal first 10 minutes. The ref then deemed one of Bruce?s tackles worthy of a yellow card. Mark McGauley?s first decent chance came a minute later but was well blocked and the home side took advantage just 60 seconds later when a looped header was too good for Terry in the Bucks goal. 5-4.

The game started to slip away two minutes later when the ref missed a ball that had gone out of play on the right only for the resulting play to lead to a 6th Surrey goal. 6-4. Despite the goal tally, Terry Taylor was playing a blinder between the sticks but was guilty of spilling one just eight minutes later from which Surrey increased their lead. 7-4. Three minutes later a Surrey freekick was laid off to a player in space and it was eight. A good angled finish from the now rampant home side made it nine, but not before skipper Gee had been shown a yellow card for dissent.

With ten minutes remaining thoughts turned to an epic comeback when Jimmy found space to drill a low shot in and reduce the arrears to just (!) 9-5. Those hopes were dashed minutes later when Surrey hit double figures against our flagging defence. The scoring was wrapped in the 84th minute when a well worked Bucks free kick was played across goal for Becks to finish. 10-6. Despite the big men staying forward and a number of late long range efforts from our knackered players, no further goals were conceded.

So a 10-6 defeat in what was, in truth, a close game. Losing the influential Dane early on was a hammer blow and George's subsequent injury meant we couldn?t rotate as planned. Further knocks were picked up - Mark pulled muscles he didn?t know he had and Haribo (usually the aggressor) was laid out in a second half challenge. Man of the match for Bucks was Terry for keeping the score to just 10. Honourable mention must go to Jimmy for his hat-trick. For Surrey, Nick Booth and Mike Smith excelled.

Many thanks to Martin Lambert, Surbiton Town's Stuart White and all the guys that turned out to give us a game. Thanks also to Padbury United for the loan of the kit and all our players and supporters who made the journey. Watch this space for further Bucks v Surrey sporting encounters.
