Bucks Mens 'B' Versus Worcs Mens 'B' ~ Match Report
Posted by bullet.gif Deano on March 25 2009
For the first time in a home game at the Herald, all 3 teams were in the same room as Bucks entertained Worcestershire at the ?new look? Herald Sporting Club. A great atmosphere was anticipated with all 6 tables upstairs, but it soon turned out not as ideal as expected with very little room round the tables and the time keepers having extra work to do with all the time-outs called.

There was also drama at the start of the match with a reshuffle required due to one A team player dropping out. Tony Haggarty, originally on the B team match sheet, was put back into the A?s and David Larner, originally down as sub replaced Tony in the starting line-up.

So, the B team line-up was Peter Lee, John Clavey, Jon Loveday, Dean Mills, Mike Chappell, Tony Theodorou, Chris Willoughby, Franco Marsala, Scott Rutter, Daren White and David Larner, with Dan Wilkins, Jason Williams and Pete Hallett named as subs.

Similar to the A team, Bucks B?s got off to the worst possible start going 5-0 down to a Worcs side who seemed more up for the game than the Bucks. Tony Theodorou briefly stopped the rot before Worcs won another 2 frames. 7-1 down and the B?s were looking at a thrashing until Scott Rutter, Daren White and David Larner restored some respectability to the scoreline, 7-4 to Worcs after the first session.

The second session also started with Bucks again losing the first 2 frames, a pattern to be repeated throughout the match. Jon Loveday, Dean Mills, Tony Theodorou, Franco Marsala and Scott Rutter put Bucks within touching distance of Worcs at 11-9 down, but it was to prove as close as Bucks were going to get as Worcs took the final 2 frames to take the session 6-5 and 13-9 overall.

After a lengthy mid session break, it was hoped the B?s could regroup and pull some quick games back to put Bucks back in the match, but the reverse happened as Worcs took the first 4 frames of the session. Bucks mounted a mini revival as subs Dan Wilkins and Jason Williams took frames, followed by Franco Marsala, Scott Rutter, Daren White and David Larner. A 6-5 session win gave Bucks slender hope of causing an upset at 18-15 down overall.

Bucks needed a flying start to the 4th session to put the pressure on Worcs, but alas, again uncharacteristically Peter Lee (0/4), John Clavey (0/4), Jon Loveday (1/4), Dean Mills (1/4), Dan Wilkins (1/2), Tony Theodorou (2/4) and Jason Williams (1/2) all lost the opening 7 frames of the session. Worcs had raced past the finish line at 25-15. Franco Marsala pulled some pride back finishing on 3/4 before Scott Rutter narrowly missed out on a perfect day for him going down in his final frame to also finish on 3/4. Daren White (3/4) and David Larner (3/4) won the final 2 frames of the match to make the final score 8-3 to Worcs for the session and 26-18 overall.

4 players finished on 3/4 wins which just goes to show how many players were off their game today. A tricky decision for the Worcs captain to nominate Bucks POM, but the choice went to David Larner, the reason given because he was originally down as sub, but came in to record a 3/4 including an excellent dish after his opponent?s dry break in the final frame. Franco Marsala, Scott Rutter and Daren White also finished on 3/4 and the POM could have gone either way.

To be fair, Worcs tactic was obviously to go "top heavy", putting their best players on first, so the stats are slightly misleading in that no one played particularly badly. It was just a combination of coming up against a very good team and the fact that we didn't have the rub of the baize in many of our losses.

Well done to the Bunnies for keeping Bucks at the top of at least one of the 3 divisions with another win 27-17, and the A?s for coming back from a disappointing start to get so close to a result finishing 21-23.

I think all 3 teams suffered with the unfamiliar setup of the new room layout, but once we can get used to the new environment I?m sure we can make the Herald an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams and a winning fortress for all of the Bucks teams.
